Elastic Comparison Between Human and Bovine Femural Bone
نویسنده
چکیده
In this study, the elastic stiffness and the degree of anisotropy will be compared for the femur human and bovine bones are presented. A scale for measuring the overall elastic stiffness of the bone at different locations is introduced and its correlation with the calculated bulk modulus is analyzed. Based on constructing orthonormal tensor basis elements using the form-invariant expressions, the elastic stiffness for orthotropic system materials is decomposed into two parts; isotropic (two terms) and anisotropic parts. The overall elastic stiffness is calculated and found to be directly proportional to bulk modulus. A scale quantitative comparison of the contribution of the anisotropy to the elastic stiffness and to measure the degree of anisotropy in an anisotropic material is proposed using the Norm Ratio Criteria (NRC). It is found that bovine femure plexiform has the largest overall elastic stiffness and bovine has the most isotropic (least anisotropic) symmetry.

Background and Aims: The present study was designed for evaluation of bovine demineralized bone matrix (DBM) in healing process of bone defects and comparison of bovine DBM (xenograft) and human DBM (allograft) which is used clinically. Materials and Methods: Seven male white New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. The incision was made directly over the midsagital suture of the parietal b...

Background: Ligament reconstruction is a common procedure in orthopedic surgery. Although several popular techniques are currently in use, new methods are proposed for secure fixation of the tendon graft into the bone tunnel. Purposes: We sought to introduce our new technique of Bashti bone plug for fixation of soft tissue graft in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and to compar...
متن کاملComparison of mechanical properties of human, bovine bone and a new processed bone xenograft.
The study compared the mechanical properties of human bone, fresh bovine bone and a new highly purified bone xenograft: T650 (Lubboc-Laddec). Destructive, compressive tests were performed to determine Young's modulus and ultimate strength, with a constant deformation rate of 0.025 mm min-1. The stress-strain curves obtained from all the non-human specimens especially the T650, did not differ si...
متن کاملComparison of human and animal femoral head chondral properties and geometries.
Investigations into tissue-preserving orthopaedic treatments should consider the tribology of articular cartilage; where simulations using animal joints are a predominant choice. However, very few studies have investigated the differences between human and animal cartilage. The aim of the present study was to characterise the differences in geometry and mechanical properties of human, porcine, ...
متن کاملComparison of the structure and mechanical properties of bovine femur bone and antler of the North American elk (Cervus elaphus canadensis).
Antler and limb bone have a similar microstructure and chemical composition. Both are primarily composed of type I collagen and a mineral phase (carbonated apatite), arranged in osteons in compact (cortical bone) sections and a lamellar structure in the cancellous (spongy or trabecular bone) sections. The mineral content is lower in antler bone and it has a core of cancellous bone surrounded by...
